City of London

City of London The City of London is the historic heart of the capital and is now one of the world’s leading financial centres. It is not a borough but is instead run by the historic City of London Corporation and is the smallest local authority in London, both in terms of area (just over a square mile) and resident population (under 10,000). With such a small population, it is not possible to collate many accurate measures of poverty. Nevertheless, from certain perspectives there appears to be little poverty in the City of London, with the lowest rate of working-age adults claiming out-of-work benefits (5.7% in the City compared to 15% in London as a whole).  No new social housing was built in the City in recent years and there is a high concentration of people sleeping rough with over 434 people recorded in the Square Mile.

All Hallows by the Tower Church (City of London)

all hallows church

One of the objectives of the Trust is to support the Anglican parish of All Hallows by the Tower, based on the edge of the City of London. The Trust leases the Vicarage to the Church on a peppercorn rent.

The Trust also supports the Church with an unrestricted annual grant. The Church serves City workers and visitors from across the world to the World Heritage site of the Tower of London. In recent years, the fall in office workers and other visitors due to the pandemic was hugely challenging for all aspects of the life and ministry of the Church, its congregation, parish and the wider community. Since then, the Church seeks particularly to support and encourage young people, be a place of well-being and care for a diverse community, striving for racial justice and inclusion.

The Trust and Church both continue to value the social benefit of spiritual space and we recognize that this wider work of the Church in the community around Tower Hill and Tower Hamlets is in line with the Trust’s grant making objectives.
